The North America World Championship Qualifier (NAWCQ) is an invite-only tournament, where Duelists will compete for a chance to represent North America at the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship 2023! The winners of the NAWCQ will receive paid travel and accommodations, along with a host of other prizes, and the title of “North America WCQ Champion 2023.” Runners-up will also receive exciting prizes.

The North America Dragon Duel Championship (NADDC) is open to all Dragon Duelists (Duelists born 2009 or later). The winner of the NADDC will receive paid travel and accommodation with 1 parent or guardian to Jump Festa, held December 17th and 18th, 2023 in Tokyo, Japan.

The NAWCQ is a 3-Day event. On Friday July 7th, Duelists who have not earned an invite for the NAWCQ will have the opportunity to play in Last Chance Qualifiers (LCQs) to earn an invite for the NAWCQ.  There will also be LCQs for the Dragon Duelists wanting to play in the NAWCQ – please see Public Event Schedule for times.  North America LCQs begin at 9:00 AM on Friday July 7, 2023. The actual World Championship Qualifier tournament itself will begin on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

On Friday July 7th, the 16 Duelists with the most World Qualifying Points from the extended 2019-2022 Organized Play season and the 16 Duelists with the most World Qualifying Points from the 2022-2023  Organized Play season will compete in a single elimination tournament.  The top two finishers will earn their invite to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Even if you do not earn an invite to compete in the NAWCQ, there are still many Public Events and Attractions to participate in throughout the weekend!

North America World Championship Qualifier (NAWCQ) Information

Q: What happens at the NAWCQ event?

A: The NAWCQ is a big, exciting 3-day event that takes place from Friday to Sunday. Duelists from all over will attend this event to compete for exclusive prizes and spend the weekend Dueling, trading, and hanging out with hundreds of other Yu-Gi-Oh! fans.

In addition to the main NAWCQ tournaments, there are numerous Public Events, like ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARD!!, Win-A-Mat, Speed Duel, Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS (DUEL LINKS), Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL (MASTER DUEL), Rivalry of Warlords, Time Wizard, and Regional Qualifier tournaments. There will also be various attractions and many OTS vendors to see. Competitive or casual, there is something for everyone to do at the NAWCQ 2023 event.

Q: Are there any COVID requirements or procedures we must follow at the NAWCQ?

A: Yes, please see the COVID-19 restrictions for the NAWCQ 2023 section near the top of the FAQ.

Q: Do I need an invite to participate in the NAWCQ or NADDC?

A: All Duelists wishing to compete in NAWCQ 2023 will need to have earned an invite at any of the following

  • A Regional Qualifier hosted between July 2019 and June 25th, 2023
    • This includes Regional Qualifier single-elimination flights hosted at YCS and Remote Duel YCS
  • A Dragon Duel event hosted between July 2019 and June 25th, 2023
  • OTS Championship event hosted between August 2019 and March 2023
  • YCS event between August 2019 and June 2023
    • This includes Remote Duel YCS

Any Dragon Duelist wishing to participate in the NADDC does not need an invite. The NADDC is open to all Dragon Duelists (Duelists born in the year 2009 or later). If a Dragon Duelist wishes to participate in the NAWCQ instead of the NADDC, they may do so as long as they have earned an invite to the NAWCQ.

Aside from the Main Tournaments, anyone wishing to attend the NAWCQ 2023 to spectate or take part in any of the Public Events or Attractions do not need an invite to do that as the hall is open to the public and all are welcome.

Q: If I qualified in Dragon Duel events, can I participate in either the NAWCQ or NADDC?

A: Duelists who have qualified in Dragon Duel events as listed above may choose to register to play in the NAWCQ 2023 instead of the NADDC 2023. Dragon Duelists may not register and/or participate in both events. A Dragon Duelist who is found to be entering or participating in both events will be disqualified and will not be able to compete in any other event, including Public Events at the NAWCQ 2023.

If a Dragon Duelists qualified during the 2019-2022 qualifying season but has since aged out of Dragon Duel tournaments (born 2009 or earlier), they would participate in the NAWCQ 2023 instead of the NADDC 2023.

Q: I won a YCS (either in-person or Remote Duel) between August 2022 and June 2023, or I am an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Champion. Are there any perks for me at the NAWCQ?

A:  All Duelists who had won a YCS event between August 2022 and June 2023 or those who won a UDS Championship Belt can register for the NAWCQ 2023 as a VIP and enjoy VIP status at the NAWCQ. Please be sure to check-in at the VIP line at the event.

Ultimate Duelist Invitational Champions are still required to bring and present their UDS Championship Belt in order to confirm their VIP status at check in on Friday July 7th, 2023.

Q: Will there be meal breaks during the tournament?

A: If there is food available inside the venue, there will not be a meal break during the tournament. If no food is available inside the venue, a meal break will be provided during the tournament. If a meal break is provided, announcements will be made the Round prior to the start of the break and a 30-minute time clock will be set. Players who do not arrive for the next Round on time will incur tardiness penalties.

Q: How do I register, turn in a Deck List, and check in for the NAWCQ or NADDC?

A: Please see the link above or go to NAWCQ 2023 Tournament Schedule and Prizing to get all the details on registering for either the NAWCQ 2023 or NADDC 2023. It will include all info on when a Deck List is due and when to be at the Raleigh Convention Center to check in, claim your seat, and get your participation prizing.

Q: Do I receive any participation prizes when I check in on Friday at the NAWCQ?

A: Yes! There will be participation prizing when you check in at the NAWCQ event. Information on these prizes will be updated in the NAWCQ Schedule and Prizing which is linked above.

Q: What Security information should I know for the event?

A:  There will be security personnel and local police onsite at the NAWCQ. Due to higher attendances at events like this, please give yourself extra time to make it through any security check before entering the hall.

Q: Who should I contact if I have questions about the NAWCQ?

Email: us-opupport@konami.com

Tournament Organizer: The Side Deck

Q: Are there any registration fees for the NAWCQ and NADDC?

A: There is no registration fee for either the NAWCQ or NADDC events.

Q: Why should I register online for the NAWCQ or the NADDC?

A: As space is limited at the event, Duelists wanting to attend should take advantage of registering online to secure a seat. Waiting too long to decide to attend could mean the NAWCQ or the NADDC could fill up and leave you only able to participate in Public Events if attending the event. Duelists who plan to attend the NAWCQ event shouldn’t wait and should secure their seat in order to guarantee a chance to compete in either the NAWCQ or NADDC! There is NO guarantee there will be any opportunity for On-Site Registration at the event.

Q:  How do I register for the NAWCQ or the NADDC?

A: Duelists will need to register online to secure a seat to compete in either the NAWCQ or the NADDC.

  • Duelists can register online here:
    • If you have not used the site before to register for a YCS event, you will need to create an account in order to register. You can do this before registration opens for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship event.
  • Registration will remain open until either all available seats in the NAWCQ and NADDC are “sold out” or until Friday July 7, 2023 at 8:00 AM ET (whichever comes first).
  • Space is limited.
  • Duelists who successfully register must still arrive at the venue and check in on Friday July 7, 2023 between 9:00 AM ET and 4:00 PM ET to confirm their seat in their Tournament or their seat will be forfeited.
  • If you are not able to check in on Friday July 7th prior to 4:00 PM due to travel or other issues, you will need to contact the Tournament Organizer by email at info@thesidedeck.com no later than 11:00 AM on Friday July 7th to make alternative check-in arrangements.

We urge you to register online for the event due to limited seating.

Q: When do I need to turn in my Deck List for the NAWCQ or the NADDC?

A: Deck Lists are due and need to be submitted online by 8:00 AM ET on Friday July 7, 2023. Registered Duelists who do not turn in their Deck List on time will automatically forfeit their seat in their tournament. While a Duelist does not need to submit a Deck List when they initially register, please do not wait until the last minute to turn it in.

Q: How do I turn in my Deck List for the NAWCQ or the NADDC??

A: Please create your Deck List at https://yugiohregistration.com/Decks/MyDeckLists.aspx. Once you have created your Deck List, you can submit it at https://yugiohregistration.com/Events/MyEvents.aspx. Simply find the Submit Deck List link for the event to find the page where you can select the name of the Deck List you have created for the event. We recommend giving each Deck List you create a unique name, so that you don’t submit the incorrect Deck List.

  • Instructions to create and register Deck Lists on the registration webpage can be found here
  • Deck Lists are to be turned in by 8:00 AM ET on Friday July 7, 2023.
  • Duelists who do not turn in their Deck List by 8:00 AM ET on Friday July 7, 2023 will automatically forfeit their seat in the tournament.
  • Deck Lists must be submitted through the online system. Physical copies of a Deck List will not be accepted on-site at the event if you registered online.
  • Once a Deck List has been submitted it can no longer be changed

If you encounter any issue at any time while submitting your list you can contact the registration site via email at ygoreg@thesidedeck.com.

Q: How do I check in at the NAWCQ or the NADDC?

A: Registered Duelists need to arrive on site at the Raleigh Convention Center between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM (ET) Friday July 7, 2023, and follow the signs confirm their seats in the tournament at Check-In. At this time, Duelists will receive their participation prizing. If you are not able to check in on Friday July 7th prior to 4:00 PM ET due to travel delays or other issues, you will need to contact the event staff via email: info@thesidedeck.com  no later than 11:00 AM on Friday July 7th to make alternative check-in arrangements.

Q: Will there be any on-site Registration for either the NAWCQ or NADDC?

A: If all available seats in either the NAWCQ or the NADDC are not taken by Online Registration, then there will be a chance to register for either event on-site at the venue on Friday July 7, 2023 between 12:00 PM and 5:00PM ET.

  • IF there is on-site Registration, it will ONLY be available on Friday July 7, 2023 between 12:00 PM ET and 5:00 PM ET
  • IF there are any seats remaining on Saturday morning, July 8, 2023, anyone who registers then will be considered Late Registration and will receive a Round 1 Loss.
  • To register on-site Duelists will need the following:
    • Duelists will need a completed Registration Form
    • Duelists will need a completed Deck List
  • Duelists who registered online and did not turn in a Deck List on time MAY NOT attempt to register on-site to get back into the tournament. Duelists would still be able to turn in a Deck List by speaking with event staff but would receive a Round 1 Game Loss for turning in their Deck List late. Any attempt to register on site to avoid a penalty for turning in a Deck List late will result in penalties, up to and including Disqualification.

Remember, there is no guarantee there will be any on-site Registration for the NAWCQ. There will be social media posts and an update to the FAQ if the NAWCQ fill up all seats before the event because of online registration.

Q: What are the rules for the 3 vs. 3 Team Duel event?

A: The 3 vs. 3 Team Dueling event will be Advanced Format Constructed, Single-Elimination with no Playoff Cut.

Duelists must use an uncut KDE Registration Form sheet to register for this event (3 Registration Forms per sheet). The top Duelist is automatically Duelist A, the middle is Duelist B, and the bottom is Duelist C.

Duelist A is the Team Captain and is the primary point of contact in regard to administrative purposes.

Each team must register a Team Name. The Team Name must be written on the top of the Registration Form. Team Names may not be offensive or disrespectful in any manner. Event Staff reserve the right to request a new team name if they feel the name may be inappropriate.

Here are the basic rules:

  • When registering for the tournament, each team will designate one Duelist on the team to be Duelist A, one to be Duelist B, and one to be Duelist C.
Team members must keep their team designation throughout the tournament.
  • At the start of the round, Duelist A will play against Duelist A, Duelist B will play against Duelist B, and Duelist C will play against Duelist C. Team members play as individuals – they do not share cards, Decks, Life Points, etc.
  • All members of the team will play a best 2 out of 3 match.
  • The team with the most Match wins gets the win for the round.

Example of play:

Team 1 (Duelist A1, Duelist B1, and Duelist C1) and Team 2 (Duelist A2, Duelist B2, and Duelist C2) play each other in Round 1.

  • Duelist A1 sits across from Duelist A2, and they play each other, best 2 out of 3.
  • Duelist B1 sits across from Duelist B2, and they play each other, best 2 out of 3.
  • Duelist C1 sits across from Duelist C2, and they play each other, best 2 out of 3.

At the end of the Round, the teams compare Match wins.

  • Duelist A1 won the Match against Duelist A2.
  • Duelist B1 won the Match against Duelist B2.
  • Duelist C1 lost the Match against Duelist C2.
  • Since Team 1 has 2 Match wins, Team 1 wins the round.

  • Your Side Deck is every card in your collection.
  • Any changes can be made to the Deck between Duels of a Match, including the following:
    • Adding Cards
    • Subtracting Cards
  • The Deck must be legal for play (appropriate number of cards in the Main and Side Deck, complies with the Forbidden and Limited list available within the MASTER DUEL app).
  • If the Duelist believes there is an error or other issue with their Deck, they should contact a Judge immediately.
  • After you finish preparing your Deck, please notify the judge that you have completed Side Decking and are ready to start your next Duel.
  • Failure to do this by the 3-minute mark may result in appropriate penalties.
    • If there are any issues while Side Decking or connecting to the room after confirming you are ready for your next Duel, please notify a judge immediately.
  • Duelists are required to revert their Deck back to its original Deck prior to the start of each Match in an On-Demand Single-Elimination Public Event. Duelists must have a MASTER DUEL legal-for-play Deck prior to each played Game/Match.
    • Some MASTER DUEL Events will require Deck Lists, please be sure to check event information regarding Deck Lists to confirm.

In case of a disconnect, win/loss will be determined by the result given in-game.  If the app crashes, or both Duelists disconnect simultaneously and a win is not decided, the Duelists will restart that Duel using the same Decks.  Side Decking will not be allowed for that specific Duel.

Instructions on how the competitors can connect to the in-game Tournament Room will be provided once you are seated for the events.

Duelists will need to have the latest MASTER DUEL app installed on their device to participate in Tournaments. MASTER DUEL will update to the latest version if needed when opened, so make sure you open the MASTER DUEL app before registering to ensure you have the latest version.

Q: What are the rules for a Rivalry of Warlords Tournament?

A: Rivalry of Warlords tournaments will use a pre-built Rivalry of Warlords Deck randomly assigned at the beginning of the tournament. No changes to the Deck are allowed.

The Duelists will then be given 10 minutes to look over their cards and read the manual for their assigned Deck before the start of the tournament.

Once the above steps are completed the Duelists then will play against their first-round opponent in a best 2-out of-3 Match.

Q: What are the rules for a Structure Deck Tournament?

A:

  • The eight (8) Duelists are seated across from their first-round opponent.
  • Each Duelist is then given one (1) of the same sealed Structure Deck.
  • The Duelists will then be given 10 minutes to look over their cards and sleeve their main Deck and Extra Deck, should they choose to do so, with tournament-legal sleeves.
  • Once the above steps are completed the Duelists then will play against their first-round opponent in a best 2-out of-3 match.
Deck Construction Rules

Extra Deck Size All Extra Deck Cards
Forbidden/Limited List The Advanced Format list does not apply.

Q: What are the rules for a Speed Duel Constructed Tournament?

A: Duelists can bring their own Speed Duel Deck and play in a Constructed Speed Duel event. Similar to above;

  • Each Duelist begins the game with 4000 Life Points
  • Each Duelist begins the game with four cards as their starting hand
  • Skill Card effects do not use the chain
  • Each Duelist has three Main Monster Zones, three Spell & Trap Zones, and one Field Zone.
  • The Duelist going first does not draw a card on their opening turn.
  • The hand size limit is six cards.
  • Each Duelist may have an active Field Spell Card.

To build your own Constructed Speed Duel Deck, you will need to follow these requirements before entering an event.

  • Only cards with a Speed Duel Logo can be used in your Deck.
  • Your Deck includes the Main Deck and may include a Side Deck and/or Extra Deck.
  • You may not have more than three copies of any card included in your Main Deck, Side Deck, and Extra Deck combined.

  • If you choose to use a Skill Card during the first Duel of a Match, you may opt not to use a Skill Card for subsequent Duels in the Match.
  • In a Constructed Tournament, you may use an Extra Deck consisting of 0 to 6 Extra Deck Monsters.

Q: What are the rules for a Tag Duel Tournament?

A: Besides the 3 vs. 3 Team events, Duelists can also pair up to play cooperatively in Tag Duel!

Tag Duel Tournaments are Advanced constructed, Single-Elimination events with no playoff cut.

Duelists must register using a Team Registration Form. The Duelist listed as Player A will be team captain for administrative purposes. Each team must register a Team Name. The Team Name must be written on the top of the Registration Form. Team Names may not be offensive or disrespectful in any manner. Event Staff reserve the right to request a new team name if they feel the name may be inappropriate.

Here are the basic rules:

  • When registering each team will designate one Duelist as Duelist A and the other as Duelist B. Team members must keep their team designation throughout the tournament.
  • Each Duelist will have their own unique field.
  • Each Duelist uses their own Deck (2 Decks per team)
  • Each Duelist uses only Pendulum Scales they control for a Pendulum Summon.
  • Duelists may use cards that their teammate possesses to pay costs for activating effects, or to meet the Summoning conditions of monsters.
  • Teams share a Life Point total of 16,000 (if it reaches zero, that team loses the Duel).
  • Each Team can have one (1) Field Spell card on the field at a time. If either Duelist on a team controls a Field Spell, it must be sent to the Graveyard before a new one can be placed (Set or activated) on the field.
  • Each Duelist can Summon Monsters from their own Extra Deck only.
  • Any member of a team may use any cards in play on their team’s side of the field for Tribute Summons, Ritual Summons, and Summons from the Extra Deck.
  • Teammates may not activate effects (Ignition Effects, Normal Spell Cards, Quick Effects, Trigger Effects, Continuous Effects, etc.) that their teammate possesses unless the effect is able to be utilized by all Duelists.
  • Trigger effects, even if it is an effect triggered by the Duelist, can only be activated by the Duelist who possesses that card.
  • Teammates may talk, compare hands, and share information freely with each other. Teammates must come to an agreement before making plays involving each other’s cards. Teammates cannot take an extended period to discuss their actions and must still conduct their moves in a timely manner.
  • A team loses if their Life Points reach zero or if either Duelist on a team cannot draw a card from their Deck when required to. If a Duelist reaches a special victory condition (such as Final Countdown or Exodia the Forbidden One), that team wins.
  • Each Duelist on each team may run three (3) of any card not currently on the Forbidden and Limited List. Each Duelist is also allowed to run one (1) of any Limited Card and two (2) of any Semi-Limited Card currently on the Forbidden and Limited Lists.

Example of Play

Duelists on the same team sit beside each other, with Duelist A seated to the right of Duelist B.

Team 1 consists of Duelists 1A & 1B and Team 2 consists of Duelists 2A & 2B.

The Turn order starts with Duelist A on the Team that chose to go first and then alternates between teams. See example below with Team 1 going first.

  • Team 1 Duelist 1A
  • Team 2 Duelist 2A
  • Team 1 Duelist 1B
  • Team 2 Duelist 2B
  • Continue until one team wins
  • The first Duelist to start the Duel does not draw at the start of their first turn
  • Tag Duel Matches are run in Best-of-One Duel Format
  • Tag Duel Matches are 30 minutes in length.
  • Tag Duel Matches utilizes the current End of Match procedure
    • When time is called, the current Duelist will finish their phase and then life points will be calculated

Attacking

The active Duelist can only attack with Attack Position monsters that they control. Duelists may not attack with their teammate’s monsters.

If there is a monster on the opponent’s side of the field (in either Duelist’s Main/Extra Monster Card Zones) then it must be destroyed before attacking the opponent’s life points directly.

The first 3 Duelists of the Duel (see above, Duelists 1A, 2A and 1B) cannot conduct their Battle Phase and cannot attack on their first turns.

Additional Rules and Card Effect interaction examples can be found here on the Alternate Tournament Format Page.

World Qualifying Points Playoff (Friday July 7th, 2023)

Q: What are World Qualifying Points?

A: World Qualifying Points are a way to earn an invite to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship 2023, held August 5-6, 2023 in Tokyo, Japan. Duelists who earned World Championship Qualifier (WCQ) invites throughout the course of the extended 2019-2022 Organized Play season and the 2022-2023 Organized Play season also earned “World Qualifying Points” which award additional invites to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship 2023 through a World Qualifying Points Playoff.

World Qualifying Points invites are awarded to a specific number of Duelists in different territories who have earned enough World Qualifying Points in the extended 2019-2022 Season and the 2022-2023 Season to compete in the World Qualifying Points Playoff.

Q: What is the North America World Qualifying Points Playoff and how do I qualify to play in it?

A:  Throughout the course of the extended 2019-2022 Organized Play season and the 2022-2023 Organized Play season, Duelists have been earning World Qualifying Points by competing at Regional Qualifiers, Dragon Duels, OTS Championships, Nationals in Latin America and of course, at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series. Whenever a Duelist placed high enough in those events to earn an invite to the WCQ, they earned World Qualifying Points based on their standing.

On Friday, July 7th at the NAWCQ, the Top 16 Points earners from the extended 2019-2022 Organized Play season and the Top 16 Points earners from the 2022-2023 Organized Play season are eligible to register for this special playoff tournament. Eligible Duelists can check in and register for the World Qualifying Points Playoff between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, the event is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.

If Duelist is in the Top 16 Points earners for both the 2019-2022 Organized Play season and the 2022-2023 Organized Play season, the next eligible Duelist from the 2022-2023 Organized Play season will become eligible for the World Qualifying Points Playoff.

You can find the Top Points earners for the extended 2019-2022 Organized Play season here:
https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/events/wqpleaderboard/wqpoints_2019-2022/

You can find the Top Points earners for the 2022-2023 Organized Play season here:

https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/events/wqpleaderboard/wqpoints/

Deck Lists will be required when you register for the World Qualifying Points Playoff, so have them ready when you register.

Eligible Duelists must be present to claim their spot to compete. If any of the Top 16 Points earners are not present to play, the Playoff spot will be then given to the next ranked player who is present (17th, and so on) till all spots are filled or 11:30 AM Friday July 7th (whichever comes first).  Duelists must register and be present no later than 11:00 AM in order to be called if there is an open spot.  We encourage any of the Top 32 Points earners from both the extended 2019-2022 season as well as the 2022-2023 season to check in between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM so that we can quickly fill any open spots if needed.

The 16 Duelists from both the extended 2019-2022 season and the 2022-2023 season who attend the NAWCQ, register and claim their spot for the World Qualifying Points Playoff will then play in an Advanced Constructed, Single-Elimination Tournament. The Top 2 Duelists from the Playoff will win an invite to the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG World Championship 2023, held August 5-6, 2023 in Tokyo, Japan.

You must bring a form of personal identification with a picture. You’ll also need money for your incidentals (food, drinks, Public Events, etc.).

Q: If I’ve never been to a NAWCQ Qualifier tournament, what should I expect?

A: The NAWCQ is among the most prestigious of all North America Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments and attract the best Duelists in North America.  Many Duelists travel great distances to attend the NAWCQ, so you can expect to meet hundreds of fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! fans from all over.

There are a lot of things you should do to make sure you are prepared before heading to the tournament.

Read over the list of things you will need for the tournament, and make sure you have everything. You’ll have a better time at the event if you don’t have too many bulky or heavy possessions to carry around, as it can get crowded there on the floor.  Think ahead while you are planning what to bring with you.

Duelists are responsible for paying attention to information from judges and/or tournament staff in order to understand what is going on. If Duelists have questions about the event either beforehand or while they are there, they should check with the Event Manager.

Before heading to the event, all Duelists should read over the KDE-US Tournament Policy and Penalty Guidelines carefully.   These documents tell you what you can and cannot do at an event and give you a good idea of what to expect.  You may find these Guidelines by clicking the following links.

Tournament Policy:

https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/downloads/penalty_guide/YGOTCG_Policy_v_2_2.pdf

Penalty Guidelines:

Remember, there is much more to do at a WCQ than just compete in the main tournament.  There are lots of Public Events, vendors buying and selling cards, and other Duelists to trade with. Read over the FAQ carefully, and you’ll be off to a great start.

Q: I will be bringing my children to the NAWCQ.  Is there anything I should know?

A: We will have a Parents’ Lounge available, where parents can relax while their children are occupied in the tournament.  This area is open only to parents and their children. You are not required to stay on site, but we strongly recommend that you do, especially if your children are young or if this is their first event.  Please know that the tournament staff cannot be responsible for looking after your children, or their possessions. Always make sure your child has a way to contact you, and is provided with any necessities such as food, drink, or extra money if you do not wish to remain in the tournament area.

When your child is preparing for the event, encourage him or her to leave any bulky or expensive possessions at home. Electronics and large collections of cards are hard to keep track of during a big tournament – your child will have a much easier day without having to worry about these kinds of items.

Trading cards are a big attraction at large tournaments, but if you are concerned about your child trading away valuable cards, talk to him or her before the event and set some guidelines. You can always have your child check with you before making a trade.

Q: Will the NAWCQ have the Bounty Feature?

A: No, there will be no bounty feature at the NAWCQ.

Q: I won a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series (YCS) during this qualifying year or an Ultimate Duelist Series (UDS) Invitational, are there any perks for me at the NAWCQ?

A: All Duelists who have won a Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series during this qualifying year or any Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational winner will receive VIP status and preferred seating at the NAWCQ. VIP Duelists will begin the tournament with a 2-Round BYE.

Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational Winners are required to bring and present their UDS Championship Belt in order to receive VIP status.

Duelists who are eligible for VIP status will register online at the same website as all other Duelists. VIPs will also get the pre-registration items when checking in on site, while supplies last.

Q: Will there be meal breaks during the tournament?

A: If there is not any food available in the event hall, a 30-minute lunch break will be scheduled into the tournament.

Q:  What if someone who came with me does not know how to play?

A: If someone who is attending the NAWCQ that does not know how to play the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG or Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Speed Duel, do not worry.  We will have capable staff on site who will be more than happy to teach them how to play.

Q: What happens if I am not done with my Match after 45 minutes?

A: Sometimes a Match will not be finished when the time ends for a round. If this happens, it is both Duelists’ responsibility to note whose turn it is when time is called. Duelists who require assistance with the End of Match procedures should raise their hand and call for a judge. The judge should be notified that the Match is ongoing and whose turn it is. The judge may or may not stay to supervise the End of Match procedure but should ensure that both Duelists understand the following procedures.

End of Match procedures should follow these three (3) rules:

Rule #1: If time is called while Duelists are in the middle of a Game, the current Game must have a decision (Win, Loss, or Draw)

Rule #2: Once the current Game has concluded with a decision, determine the winner of the Match by determining the number of Game Wins (or Game Losses) each Duelist has for the current Match. The Duelist with the most Game Wins will win the Match.

Swiss Rounds: If both Duelists have the same number of Game Wins, or if time was called in between games of a Match when both Duelists had the same number of Game Wins, then the Match is a Draw.

Single-Elimination Rounds: If both Duelists have the same number of Game Wins, or if time is called in between Games of a Match while both Duelists have the same number of Game Wins, they will begin a new Duel with specific guidelines.

  • Neither Duelist may use his or her Side Deck. If time was called in between Games of a Match and at least one Duelist has already accessed his or her Side Deck, then both Duelists may use their Side Deck.
  • Duelists must use a random method (die roll, coin flip, etc.) to determine who will go first.
  • The Duel will continue for a total of four (4) turns, two (2) turns for each Duelist, unless a Duelist manages to win the Duel before the four (4) turns have concluded.
    • A “turn” is defined as the start of the Draw Phase until the end of the End Phase for a single Duelist.
  • Once the four (4) turns are completed, Life Point totals are compared and the Duelist with the highest Life Point total wins the Match.
  • If both Duelists’ Life Points are the same after the four (4) turns are completed, then play will continue on a turn-by-turn basis, with the Duelist with the most Life Points at the end of a turn being declared the winner of that Game.

Rule #3: If a win condition occurs during End of Match Procedures, that Duelist wins the current Game.

Keeping these three (3) rules in mind, please follow these instructions when proceeding to End of Match procedures:

  • Continue with the current Phase of the Game. Once the Phase is over, stop the game.
  • Determine a Game Winner at this point, with the Duelist with the most Life Points winning the Game.
    • During Swiss Rounds, if both Duelists’ Life Points are the same, the Game is a Draw. Compare Game Wins with the Duelist with the most Game Wins winning the Match. If the Game Win totals are the same, the Match is a Draw.
    • During Single-Elimination, if both Duelists’ Life Points are the same at the end of the current Phase (Step 1 above), finish the current turn. If both Duelists’ Life Points are the same at the end of the turn, then play will continue on a turn-by-turn basis, with the Duelist with the most Life Points at the end of a turn being declared the winner of that Game.
  • Match Draws cannot occur during Single-Elimination Rounds.

North America Dragon Duel Championship (NADDC) Information

Q: What happens at the NADDC?

A: The NADDC is a tournament open to all Dragon Duelists that are residents of North America, where Duelists born 2009 or later will compete for exclusive prizes and the chance to become the undisputed North America Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Dragon Duel Champion.

If a Dragon Duelist earned in invite through a Dragon Duel tournament at a Regional Qualifier or Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series (YCS) event, they can choose to participate in the North America World Champ Qualifier (NAWCQ) instead of the NADDC. The Dragon Duelist would not be able to participate in both events.

If a Dragon Duelist earned an invite during the extended 2019-2022 Organized Play Season, but is no longer eligible for Dragon Duel events, they would only be able to participate in the NAWCQ, not the NADDC.

In addition to the NADDC, there will be numerous Public Events to participate in during all three days.

Q: Do I need an invite to participate in the NADDC?

A: As announced earlier in the year, the Dragon Duel WCQ will change to the Dragon Duel Championship.  The Dragon Duel Championship will not require an invite to enter.  Any Dragon Duelist meeting the age requirement for the season can participate.  The full announcement may be viewed on our website https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/news/announcing-the-dragon-duel-championship/.

Dragon Duel tournaments will still be hosted at select Regional Qualifiers, Nationals in Latin America, and YCS. Instead of awarding invites to the Dragon Duel World Championship Qualifier, these tournaments will award invites to the all ages WCQ which are open to all Duelists with an invite.

  • Dragon Duelists will continue to compete against one another at the Regional, National, and YCS level.
  • Dragon Duelists will earn invites to the WCQ, instead of a separate Dragon Duel WCQ.
  • Any Dragon Duelist that earns an invite to the WCQ can choose to participate in the Dragon Duel Championship instead of the WCQ, but they will not be able to compete in both.
  • You will not receive an invite or certificate in the mail.
  • You will not receive an invite or certificate via e-mail.
  • You will not be required to present any kind of certificate in order to enter a WCQ or Dragon Duel Championship.
  • Your name and information will be added to the Invite List, and that is proof that you qualified for the all ages WCQ.
  • Information about your WCQ will likewise be posted online – it will not be mailed or sent to you. Duelists are responsible for verifying that their name appears on the WCQ Invite List, and to access posted information about their WCQ by checking the https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/events/index.html page for updates.

If you have a question about your invite status, you can email us-opsupport@konami.com and ask. Please provide your full name, CARD GAME ID number, date and location of the event at which you qualified, along with your question, so we can answer you quickly and efficiently.

Q: If I qualified in a Dragon Duel tournament (for Duelists born 2009 or later), can I play in the all ages NAWCQ 2023?

A: Any Dragon Duelist that has an invite to the NAWCQ can choose to participate in the all ages NAWCQ instead of the NADDC, but they will not be able to compete in both.

If you have a question about your invite status, you can email us-opsupport@konami.com and ask. Please provide your full name, CARD GAME ID number, date and location of the event at which you qualified, along with your question, so we can answer you quickly and efficiently.

Q: How much does it cost to enter the NADDC?

A: The only booster pack prizes are listed in the prize breakdown on the main FAQ page. No other booster pack prizes will be awarded.

Q: What is the format for the NADDC?

A: The NADDC tournament is a Constructed event, which means each Duelist must bring his or her own Deck in order to compete. Decks must be constructed according to the latest Advanced Format guidelines. (See here for more information: http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/limited/)  You will need to make sure your Deck matches the current format.

Q: How many rounds will the NADDC have?

A: The total number of Duelists will determine the number of rounds that are played.

Q: How many Duelists will advance to the Top Cut?

A:

If there are 4 – 16 Dragon Duelists registered for the NADDC, the tournament will cut to the Top 4 after all Rounds of Swiss are completed.

If there are 17 – 32 Dragon Duelists registered for the NADDC, the tournament will cut to the Top 8 after all Rounds of Swiss are completed.

If there are 33 – 64 Dragon Duelists registered for the NADDC, the tournament will cut to Top 16 after all Rounds of Swiss are completed.

If there are 65 – 128 Dragon Duelists registered for the NADDC, the tournament will cut to Top 32 after all Rounds of Swiss are completed.

If there are 129 or more Dragon Duelists registered for the NADDC, the tournament will cut to Top 64 after all Rounds of Swiss are completed.

Q: What will I need to bring to the NADDC tournament?

A: You should bring a tournament-legal Deck as described under “What is the format for the NADDC?,” along with any tournament supplies you will need, such as paper and pen to track Life Points, dice or counters if you are using cards which require them, extra sleeves to replace any that become damaged, and so forth.  If you have a CARD GAME ID number, you should bring your number. You must bring a form of personal identification with a picture. You’ll also need money for your incidentals (food, drinks, Public Events, etc.).

Q: If I’ve never been to a NADDC tournament, what should I expect?

A: The NADDC is among the most prestigious of all North America Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments and should attract the best Dragon Duelists in North America.  Many Dragon Duelists travel great distances to attend the NADDC, so you can expect to meet fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! fans from all over.

Penalty Guidelines:

https://www.yugioh-card.com/en/downloads/penalty_guide/Penalty_Guidelines_v_2_2.pdf

Remember, there is much more to do at the NADDC than just compete in the main tournament.  There are lots of Public Events, vendors buying and selling cards, and other Duelists to trade with. Read over the FAQ carefully, and you’ll be off to a great start.

Q: I will be bringing my children to the NADDC.

Q: Will the NADDC have the Bounty Feature?

A: No, there will be no bounty feature at the NADDC.

Q: Will there be meal breaks during the NADDC?

A: Yes, there will be a meal break during Day 1 of the NADDC.  The meal break will happen after the 3rd round of Swiss. The meal break will last approximately an hour until the start of the 4th round. Please listen to the onsite tournament staff for additional instructions and for when to return.

Q:  What if someone who came with me does not know how to play?

A: If someone who is attending the NAWCQ that does not know how to play Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG or Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Speed Duel do not worry.
